Making a Difference, One Lesson at a Time

Meet two of our teen volunteer tutors, Kiren and Alex! 

Kiren and Alex began tutoring with Welcome Neighbor in August of 2024. For Alex, tutoring has been a window into new perspectives. Through their conversations, he’s come to better understand the challenges refugees face when coming to the United States — the need for support, the difficulty of adjusting, and the resilience it takes to start over.

Kiren has especially enjoyed building relationships with the two children they tutor, Saiwasch and Faisal.

Some of their favorite memories come from simple, joyful moments — like playing Uno together. There’s also a deep sense of warmth and community: the boys’ parents often offer tea and homemade food, creating an atmosphere of hospitality.
